I am a composer and sound designer based in Wellington, New Zealand

collaborating with creatives all over the world to emotively tell stories across location-based, film and interactive experiences.

Approach

I start by asking questions and understanding what we are trying to achieve. What is the purpose of music or sound in the story or space? What emotions do we want to elicit? Discussing our project’s goals abstractly can help us find exciting fresh approaches.

Inspired by these conversations I work to to compose music that uniquely serves our project, bringing in techniques across the spectrum from traditional instruments and cultural influences to synthesis and sound design.

Projects

Recent works include Emmy award-winning music editing on Sir Peter Jackson’s ‘Get Back’ series about The Beatles, and collaborations with Weta Workshop, Sir Richard Taylor and Park Road Post creating immersive scores and soundscapes for location based experiences including ‘Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War’ and ‘Weta Workshop Unleashed’. Gallipoli exceeded attraction records, with more than 2.7 million visitors in a country of only 4 million. Both experiences received a global THEA Themed Entertainment Association award.

Tane’s musical capabilities are staggering and his skill at weaving an emotional state and journey completely enthrals and amazes me. Whatever the medium – Tane can deliver originality, beauty and dynamic connection through his music.
— Sir Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop

Where a project needs the human touch, I work with exceptional players from a variety of backgrounds, from large ensembles like the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, to soloists such as Taonga Puoro (traditional Māori instrumentation) and traditional instrumental specialists from other cultures.

And where a project needs something modern or otherworldly I unleash an arsenal of synths and digital processes, embracing electronica influences and concocting unique musical sounds from unexpected sources.
